What they're saying about the Mental Edge...

"
"Thank you so much for all of your support! You
run a great program and it really helped me
acheive all of my goals. Take care!"
~Becky Kortum
____________________
Our experience working with the Mental Edge has
proven the additional life-altering benefits
that your mentoring offers in addition to just
the sport-specific goals you work on. It sounds
crazy, but I truly believe that Shaun was an
angel that came into our son's life to lead him
down the right path. We were all in a dark
place, crushed to think that
his dreams might have come to an end. We knew it
wasn't life threatening and we knew things could
be much worse. But we also saw a vulnerable,
talented, driven kid with so much potential and
commitment, on the verge of giving up and
changing his life path out of desperation. It
wasn't our place to try to convince him
otherwise because we knew what he had gone
through, but, we also knew the alternative could
be very detrimental to his happiness. Shaun's
approach truly was the answer, and the respect
that our son had for him immediately was
amazing. Equally important was Shaun's
willingness to take our phone call from a parent
you knew nothing about, regarding an ordinary 15
year old kid you knew nothing about and take the
situation
seriously enough to help him before it was too
late. This was impressive and very kind hearted,
considering the caliber of athletes that you try
to squeeze into Shaun's busy calendar. Thank you
from the
bottom of my heart for that! Hockey aside, the
life lessons that he has taken from this are
invaluable and life changing. His renewed
strength is amazing. The joke around our house
is that I need "a Shaun" in my life. I think
it's hardest on moms seeing their kids go
through tough times!
Thanks for everything!

"I watched my son the last two tourneys and he
has really had great focus! It's like he was
like his old self prior to going to the U when I
used to watch him as a junior. It's like my
real son is back! His progress has been fun to
watch. I hope you realize I think you really
helped and he does too! Thanks so much for your
time and effort. You'll always have a place
in our family's heart."

"When we first met Justin Johnson at a State
Bantam tournament a few years ago, he talked a
little bit about The Mental Edge. I remember
thinking to myself, "This is exactly what my son
needs!" My son, Nolan, was one of our team's
two goaltenders. He had good skills, but was
struggling with confidence issues and was having
difficulty dealing with adversity. Having
majored in Psychology myself, I was keenly aware
of the importance of mental preparation. On the
way home from the tournament, I talked with
Nolan about The Mental Edge. Always interested
in improving his game, he was very interested in
trying it out.
All of Nolan's goaltending training has been
valuable, but The Mental Edge training has
clearly been the most effective. I sat back and
watched, with amazement, as his game
consistently improved and his own satisfaction
with his performance visibly increased over the
next season. He was having fun again!
Consequently, I became much more relaxed at his
games. I began to enjoy break-a-ways, because I
knew he was going to make the save!
At the end of the season, Nolan received a
hand-written note from his coach congratulating
him on his performance during the season. The
coach went on to say, "Your consistency and
confidence improved constantly, as did your
skills." His team members and other parents
also noticed the difference.
Many of the mental strategies that he learned
from Justin to improve his athletic skills are
also excellent life skills that have helped him
to become more assertive, responsible, and
emotionally mature in his personal life. The
training he received from The Mental Edge was
not only the best investment I have ever made in
my son's athletic career, but also his emotional
development. I would strongly recommend this
program to any athlete, especially the youth.
My son and I are both very grateful that we
found The Mental Edge."

Mental
Edge Athlete of the Month
After
having the privilege of working with
many athletes over the years we have
decided to name a Mental Edge Athlete of
the Month each month. As a staff we talk
through the athletes we are working
with and come up with one that embodies
the concep ts
we teach and values we stand for.
Joe Rehkamp
Senior Breck High School
Joe Rehkamp
has been a four-year player on the Breck
Hockey team. He has been a captain for two
years and is regarded as one of the top
senior players in the state. But what makes
Joe so special is his work ethic and
dedication. He is a tireless worker with
incredible self-discipline and focus. Joe
has worked hard at his Mental Toughness
Skills and because of this he has reaped the
benefits of being able to play under
pressure, maintain his confidence, and
persevere through some points of great
challenge. Joe is a team player and
constantly looks to make those around him
better. Because of hard work and focus,
along with talent, Joe accepted an
invitation to play at the Air Force Academy
in 2011 and will play with the USHL's Fargo
team next year. We congratulate Joe Rehkamp
for being our March Athlete of the Month!

The Truth is Intriguing
Shaun Goodsell, MA
Senior Performance Coach
Shaun@MentalEdgeNow.com
Over the
past twenty plus years I have spent
thousands of hours with teenagers, parents
and coaches. The time spent has taught me
that many teenage athletes are hungry for
quality feedback that is descriptive,
specific, and informed. The more kids get
this type of feedback the more they are
equipped to direct their physical and mental
energy towards improving, as well as,
leveraging strengths. This seems to unleash
energy, engagement, and passion that many
coaches and parents are often surprised to
see, yet, scratch their heads on how to
replicate.
What is
truthful is that
"the truth is intriguing". What is
false is "encouragement is the answer
to every struggle a kid has". When we as
coaches and parents give truthful feedback
in an intriguing manner (even though that
feedback might create pain) we often set
kids free from unrealistic expectations,
unnecessary pressure, and engage them in
ways we have not been able to in the past.
Let me share an example. Many hockey players
go into games with personal expectations of
themselves that they should be impact
players. In their minds that means scoring
or tallying points. However, many of these
players get discouraged game in and game out
only to be told to" be patient it will
come". The truth is there are very few
impact players and this player may be best
served by being told they do not currently
possess the skills to be an impact player.
To a player that most likely has experienced
frustration and disappointment, they might
be set free to now excel in other ways
because they were told the truth.
It is my
belief that we better serve our young
athletes by telling them the truth. The
truth truly does set you free!

Battling
the Play-off Nerves
Justin
Johnson, BA, Performance Coach
Justin@MentalEdgeNow.com
We've all heard the horror stories,
sleepless nights, loss of appetite,
vomiting in the locker room, ulcers and
even nervous breakdowns. Being an
athlete means joining those who have
fought the demons of competition and its
demands since the dawn of the sports.
Psychologists use the terms arousal and
anxiety but it's more commonly known in
athletic circles as jitters,
butterflies, or just plain nerves. In
this installment I'd like to shed some
light on this physical and psychological
phenomenon that is as familiar to
athletes as sweat.
First, it is important to understand
having a feeling of arousal is actually
a good thing. It is a signal to your
body that you care about the upcoming
events. In fact, when it comes to
performing at or near peak it is far
better to experience a level of arousal
than to be emotionally flat. So to spend
time and energy working to eliminate
arousal prior to competition is actually
counterproductive.
Arousal vs. Nerves
Though
it may be difficult to recognize there
is a slight difference between arousal
and nerves. The sensation you feel prior
to competition comes from the sum of
what you are thinking about most.
Therefore what you think about will
determine the type of feeling you will
have prior to competition. To help you
separate a helpful dose of arousal that
leads to peak performance from the
harmful overwhelmed feeling of
nervousness that stifles performance,
let's take a look at the type of
thinking that would generate each
feeling.
Arousal/ Helpful
Nerves/ Harmful
Look
forward to competing I hope I
don't make a mistake
Excited
to display skill Our
opponent is good & I don't feel ready
Anticipating playing well Am
I good enough?
The
majority of athletes who report having
an overwhelming feeling of nervousness
before and during games do so because
their thoughts become consumed with
trying to predict what may happen once
they begin play. Will I be ready? Will I
play well? Who is watching? I hope I
don't make a mistake. In addition to
feeling nervous, they will also
unintentionally be sending negative
messages to their body. For example, if
you think to yourself "I hope I don't
make a mistake", more than likely the
image you see in your head when you say
that is one of you making a mistake.
Although your intentions are good your
body is going to follow and pay
attention to the image rather than the
intention. Thus creating both a nervous
feeling and a troubling message for your
body to follow.
So how do you put yourself in a position
to experience the type of arousal that
actually sets you up for peak
performances? First and foremost pay
attention to what you are thinking about
prior to competition. If you feel
nervous because you've been thinking
about failing, then change it. Focus on
a part of your game you are confident in
and think about how that part will help
you play well. In addition to how you
think, don't forget to tap into some of
the pillars of mental toughness.
Pre-Game Nerves Checklist
Have a routine you can trust:
the regular season should help you
refine and develop your routine so
regardless of importance of game you
have comfort in consistent preparation.
Develop quality practice habits:
through quality practice habits the
confidence in your ability to execute
under pressure will increase.
Focus on what you control:
much of the mental energy athletes waste
is by thinking about events they have no
control over. Focus on what you can do
and what you control.
By
paying close attention to the type of
thoughts you have prior to competition
and developing the type of habits
included on the checklist, you will
consistently find yourself amongst the
breed of athletes anxiously awaiting the
opportunity to display their skill and
compete!
